Karin Ross Designs is honored to be featured in the Jan/Feb 2026 issue of Kansas City Homes & Style. The magazine spotlight highlights a recent kitchen remodel that blends French country influence with practical design decisions shaped by everyday family life.
The feature reflects our approach to kitchen design. We begin by understanding how a space is used, then create a plan that supports function, longevity, and comfort without sacrificing character.
The Vision Behind the Kitchen Remodel
The homeowners were not pursuing a trend-driven remodel. They wanted a kitchen that worked better for their family and felt natural within the home.
As Chelsea shared in the magazine,
“We decided to update the kitchen after realizing it had become the most-used space in our home, but didn’t reflect the warmth and character we wanted or functionality.”
That clarity allowed the project to focus on meaningful improvements rather than surface-level changes.
How the Kitchen Is Used Day to Day
Before selecting finishes or layouts, our team focused on how the kitchen functioned day to day. Cooking, baking, cleaning, homework, and gathering all took place in the same space.
Understanding those routines shaped the layout, storage strategy, and circulation through the kitchen. The result is a space that feels organized and comfortable even during busy moments.
French Country Design Elements Used in This Kitchen
The homeowners were drawn to the warmth and texture associated with French country kitchens. Our role was to translate that style into a space that felt authentic and livable.
Chelsea explained,
“I’ve always loved the inviting feel of French country design with the mix of natural textures and timelessness, and effortless ‘lived in’ feel.”
Cabinetry, Stone, and Finish Selections
Real stone backsplashes bring depth and character to the kitchen.
“The real stone backsplashes throughout the kitchen bring personality and style to the space, again replicating a French country kitchen.”
Warm wood cabinetry and natural surfaces reinforce the old-world influence while ensuring durability and longevity. These materials were selected to age well and remain visually grounded over time.
Appliance Layout and Cooking Area Design
While the kitchen reflects old-world charm, it was designed to function at a modern level. A dark-shaded contemporary gas range and custom vent hood anchor the cooking area while meeting current performance expectations.
Gold-tone transitional wall sconces frame the range and soften the visual weight of the space. Layered lighting throughout the kitchen supports daily use without drawing attention away from the overall design.
Kitchen Island Layout and Storage Design
The island was designed as a working surface used throughout the day rather than a purely decorative feature. Its custom shape provides prep space, seating, and integrated storage while keeping the perimeter cabinetry clean and balanced.
Chelsea noted,
“The kids love sitting at the island snacking and playing, while I am cooking or cleaning.”
A brass chandelier imported from Italy anchors the island visually and adds warmth to the space without overpowering it.
Flooring, Sink, and Functional Details
Several thoughtful details contribute to how the kitchen functions on a daily basis. Wide-plank engineered hardwood flooring was chosen for stability and durability while reinforcing the French country aesthetic.
A long vintage-inspired runner adds softness near the sink area. A 45-inch sink with double faucets allows multiple people to work comfortably at the same time.
As Chelsea shared,
“With the double sink, my husband and I have room to stand together to do dishes.”
Open corner shelving provides flexible storage and allows the family to change displays seasonally while maintaining a cohesive look.
Final Kitchen Design and Daily Use
This kitchen was never intended to feel staged or overly formal. It was designed to support real life.
Kansas City Homes & Style described the space as one that “embodies old-school enchantment while offering modern amenities.” From morning routines to evening meals, the kitchen supports daily rhythms while maintaining a refined and welcoming feel.
Chelsea and Clay shared,
“We wanted a lived-in feel, and a kitchen designed to be used, loved, and enjoyed every day.”
